Volvo Buses invites registrations for 4th Edition of Volvo Sustainable Mobility Awards

Stakeholders working in the broad area of sustainable mobility are invited to participate.

Instituted in 2011, the Volvo Sustainable Mobility Awards have gained momentum with valuable participation from across the nation. Past recipients of the awards include a variety of organisations including Mapunity, EMBARQ India, India Urban Space Foundation, ArriveSAFE, Mumbai Environmental Social Network, Praja, EcoCabs and Ride-A-Cycle Foundation.

Volvo Buses in India reaffirms its commitment to sustainable mobility and transport and announced start of registrations for the Volvo Sustainable Mobility Awards 2014. Volvo is inviting stakeholders from among citizen groups/NGOs, organisations/ consultancies, and institutions among others, to participate in the 4th Edition of the awards. The Volvo Sustainable Mobility Awards aims to reward progressive and practical action in the area of promoting sustainable solutions in urban mobility.

This year the overall prize money has been increased to INR 1.2 million. This would include INR 700,000 for the winner, INR 300,000 for 1st runner-up and, inclusion of new category for 2nd runner up, which will get INR 200,000. Registrations for the awards have started and the last date to register is August 31, 2014. Interested participants can visit www.volvobuses.co.in to refer to the Application Guidelines and Terms & Conditions.  Last date for submission of projects is September 20, 2014. 

The Volvo Sustainable Mobility Awards has been instituted to recognise outstanding efforts in the broad area of sustainability. It also seeks to award practical action and engagement with society in this regard. Over the previous three editions of the awards, the participation levels both in terms of number of submissions as well as quality of projects have risen significantly. In 2013, a total of 51 eligible projects were submitted to the jury for assessment, which included increased number of submissions from among various stakeholders.

An important aspect that has emerged over the past editions is the interpretations & scope of “sustainable mobility”. Projects submitted in the previous years’ address diverse areas such as bus transport, metro & commuter rail services, integration of multiple modes of transportation, urban planning, road planning, promoting non-motorised transport, pedestrian rights to safety & convenience and addressing environmental concerns, besides promoting new technologies to people.

General Criterion for Eligibility
All efforts in the general area of sustainable mobility are eligible. However, Organisations directly involved with manufacturing or operating public transport as part of their business are not eligible for the main award with respect to their core business.

Application guidelines
All applicants are requested to prepare the report in the format the following for final submissions.

  • Define the project with a clear objective
  • Purpose and scope of the project
  • Achievements till date
  • Next steps planned
  • CV of the group / individuals involved

Winners of Previous Editions of Volvo Sustainable Mobility Awards
Mapunity was announced winner for the first edition of the Volvo Sustainable Mobility Award in 2011. Praja was given a special recognition for their efforts in addressing a multitude of issues.

The top honours in the second season of the award in 2012 were jointly shared by EMBARQ India and India Urban Space Foundation, while Praja was declared runner-up. The jury also conferred Special Recognitions upon a collaborative effort between Ride-A-Cycle-Foundation with its partners as well as a Group from IIT Madras.

In 2013, ArriveSAFE and Mumbai Environment Support Network were declared joint winners for their respective initiatives. EcoCabs was declared runner up last year. EMBARQ India and Delhi Integrated Metro were given Special Recognitions.
